Perp Trading Fees: Maker, Taker, Funding and Swap Costs

Updated · 2 min read

Perp trading costs have three parts: the trading fee on each fill (maker or taker), the holding cost (funding or a fixed swap), and the spread and slippage. Fees are charged on the full position notional, not your margin. At 10x leverage a 0.055% taker fee costs 0.55% of your margin each way.

  • Taker fees apply to orders that hit the book immediately (market orders); maker fees to resting limit orders.
  • Bybit's base tier is 0.02% maker / 0.055% taker, the rate most Bybit-based prop firms pass on.
  • Fees scale with leverage relative to your account: fee % × leverage = cost as % of margin per side.
  • Prop firms either pass through venue fees or set their own flat rates.

Fee math on a leveraged position

Fee = fill notional × fee rate (notional = quantity × price)

Round trip on $10,000 notional

  1. Taker in and out at 0.055% → $5.50 + $5.50 = $11.00.
  2. Maker in and out at 0.02% → $2.00 + $2.00 = $4.00.
  3. On a $1,000 margin (10x), the taker round trip costs 1.1% of margin.
  4. 20 taker round trips a month ≈ 22% of margin, before a single losing trade.

Fees reduce your balance and eat into your daily loss and max drawdown allowances. A strategy that scalps dozens of times a day can breach a 3% daily limit on fees alone during a flat session.

Frequently asked questions

Does leverage increase trading fees?

The fee rate doesn't change, but a bigger position means a bigger notional, so the dollar fee rises with position size.

Are limit orders always maker orders?

Only if they rest on the book. A limit order that crosses the spread fills immediately as a taker. Some prop firms (e.g. MyFundedPerps) charge the same rate for both.
